Job Opening: St. Perpetua Parish, Lafayette – Director of Faith Formation

St. Perpetua Parish, Lafayette, CA, is an active, mid-size suburban Catholic community of more than 1100 households. The parish has an established Faith Formation program with many highly trained and motivated catechists. The parish has a K-8 parochial school. This is an opportunity for a resourceful, multi-talented, and collaborative person to make a significant contribution to the ministry of Catholic Faith Formation.

Primary responsibility will be the direction of the pre-K through 5^th grade program, Sacramental Preparation, and strong emphasis on the Junior High (grades 6-8) program. The Director of Faith Formation recruits, trains, and supervises volunteer catechists, plans and facilitates meetings, schedules classes and facilities in collaboration with parish and school staff, selects and orders materials and books, and serves as a member of the parish staff.

Qualifications: Practicing, fully initiated Roman Catholic, BA in theology/Faith Formation or related field, minimum of three years of teaching experience in a Catholic School or equivalent and one year of administrative experience (paid or volunteer). Ability to collaborate with parish and school staff and volunteers.

Salary and Benefits: Full-time (40 hours), 11 month, exempt position (some evening and weekends required), M3-4 classification according to diocesan scale and benefits.

Dinner and Movie: Marie Antoinette

To compliment Fr. Michael Morris's class "Art and Religion in the Modern Era" the Daughters of Mary will be hosting a Movie Night this upcoming Monday (2/11) to screen Sofia Coppola's Marie Antoinette (2006). While the class's goal may be to gain insight into Revolutionary France, you are welcome to come and marvel at the pretty clothes, wax nostalgic to the post-punk soundtrack, enjoy Jason Schwartzman's unlikely performance as Louis XVI or figure out what the heck Entertainment Weekly was talking about when it referred to Coppola's Marie Antoinette as "a new breed of post-post-post feminist woman."

We will serve dinner at 5 and start the movie at 6 in the Galleria and Classroom 1 at the DSPT. All are welcome. We will accept donations to go toward our continuing goal of a statue of Mary for our chapel, but no one will be turned away for lack of funds. (This isn't Versailles after all.)

An Aristotelian Account of Events and Their Individuation

One aspect of the metaphysics of events is ontological reflection on events to include accounts of their individuation and identity. There are two dominant families of views regarding the identity and individuation of events: property-exemplification accounts and causal history accounts. My concern in the present paper is solely with the first of these families. I begin by raising a number of problems faced by extant property-exemplification accounts of events and their individuation. Then, building upon an Aristotelian ontology, I develop a property-exemplification theory of events and their individuation that avoids the problems facing its rival accounts.

Aristotle and Contemporary Theories of Mind

In recent years, some scholars have sought to portray Aristotle’s doctrine of soul, sense and mind, as an ancient version of contemporary theories in the philosophy of mind. Specifically, some have argued that in the De Anima he espouses a sort of functionalism about the physical realization of mental states and capacities, or the supervenience of mental states on physical processes. A more accurate understanding of his philosophy, however, reveals that his insights into what is distinctive about cognition as an activity are not easy to correlate with contemporary presuppositions about mental states or physical processes.

Metaphor in the Light of On Interpretation, 16a 3-8

The theory and use of metaphora by Aristotle is a problem that scholars have addressed without a satisfactory answer. Instead of simply tracing the varied uses of metaphora in the various treatises, I propose that the semantics of metaphora needs to be explained. Aristotle’s views about the relation between language, thought and reality as depicted in On Interpretation 16a 3-8 in conjunction with the references to metaphora throughout the Corpus provide a framework to understand metaphora as a complex phenomenon of epiphora, metapherein and metaphorikon einai. Aristotle’s theory of metaphora helps us to understand the relationship between language and thought in Aristotle’s philosophy.
